Tradition, verified

Why the tongue?

Tongue examination, Jihva Pariksha, is one of the traditional examinations in Ayurveda, and looking at the tongue is part of assessment in Traditional Chinese Medicine too. Practitioners have long read it alongside the pulse, because it is visible, quick and needs nothing but good light.

Nadiswara checks that the photo is a clear tongue image, then reads it on our servers zone by zone — root, sides, centre, front and tip — noting features such as colour, coating, moisture, shape, marks and cracks. Those readings are combined with your symptoms and your answers to work out a wellness score and the patterns that need attention, and the report shows you what it saw on your tongue, in each zone.

In the app

From photo to report

Four moments of a tongue session. Pick a step, or let it play.

Step 1 of 4: Capture your tongue. The app shows a dashed outline, asks you to hold the phone above your face, then opens a cropper to fit the tongue in the frame.

Tongue

Hold the phone above your face

Step 1 of 4

Capture your tongue

Take a clear photo of your tongue in good lighting so it fills the frame. Hold the phone above your face and frame only from below your nose to your jaw; the photo can also come from your gallery.

Then the cropper — “Fit your tongue”: keep only the tongue inside the frame. Drag to move, pinch to zoom, and use the photo.

  • Sit in a well-lit area, preferably near natural light.
  • Keep the camera close enough so the tongue fills the frame.
  • Keep only the tongue inside the frame
  • Do not include eyes or forehead.

The journey

Four steps in the Nadiswara app

Each title below is the screen you will see.

  1. Symptoms

    How are you feeling?

Type or speak — in your own words. Describe your symptoms in English or ಕನ್ನಡ; tap the mic to record and the app transcribes what you said. Returning members first rate each symptom from last time: Better, Same or Worse.

  2. Summary

    Symptoms summary

Review the extracted summary and symptoms before continuing. The app turns your words into a structured list of symptoms, shown as chips under “What you said”.

  3. Tongue

    Capture your tongue

Take a clear photo of your tongue in good lighting so it fills the frame, then fit it in the cropper: “Keep only the tongue inside the frame”. The photo is required here — no pulse is recorded, so the report is based on your tongue.

  4. Assessment

    A few questions about you

Your answers help us understand your health better. It takes about a minute. One answer or several per card, with a count of how many are left.

Then the app checks the photo — “Checking your tongue photo”, up to a minute — asks a few quick yes/no questions, and prepares the report: “Reading your tongue insights”, “Mapping your meridians”, “Writing your summary”.

Capture guide

How to take the photo

The same guide the app shows before you take the photo. A good photo is the whole input, so it is worth a minute.

The correct way

  1. Hold the phone above your face.
  2. Frame only from below your nose to your jaw.
  3. Open your mouth and stretch your tongue out fully.
  4. Ensure good lighting and clear focus.
  5. Do not include eyes or forehead.

Follow the correct method so the photo passes the check and the session has a clear image to work from.

Fit your tongue

Keep only the tongue inside the frame

After the photo, the app opens a cropper so you can drag and zoom until only the tongue is inside the frame. The zones are read from what you keep, so leave out lips and teeth where you can.

Checking your tongue photo

This can take up to a minute. Thanks for waiting.

A photo that is not accepted shows “Tongue photo not accepted” with “Try again” and “Retake photo”, and no report is written until a clear photo passes.

Avoid

  • Too much face (includes eyes and forehead)
  • Too close (not showing nose to jaw)
  • Blurry or Dark (unclear image)

Tips for Perfect Capture

  • Sit in a well-lit area, preferably near natural light.
  • Stick your tongue out fully and hold it steady.
  • Keep the camera close enough so the tongue fills the frame.

Tip from the app: Tongue photos are clearest in natural light, before eating or brushing.

On your tongue

What the report sees on your tongue

Every tongue report shows the zones it looked at, what it noted in each and how much each pattern shows — in the app's own words. This is a sample member, not a real reading.

  • What we saw on your tongue

Your photo, in a Photo or Zones view, and a tongue map you can tap: Root, Sides, Centre, Front and Tip, plus the whole tongue, each with what the reading noted there — or “Nothing notable in this zone”.

  • A written tongue reading

The “Tongue reading” section puts the photo analysis into plain sentences, zone by zone, before any score.

  • Pattern contribution

A donut of how much each pattern shows on your tongue, in percentages, with a slice to tap for each one.

  • A wellness score and 6 areas

A score out of 100 with its status, a one-line headline, “In short”, and “Wellness at a glance”: 6 areas such as Digestion, Sleep and Stress, weakest first.

  • Your main patterns, with levels

The three patterns your reading points to — Main focus, Secondary and Tertiary — each with a level chip: Healthy, Mild, Moderate or High. Returning members also see “Since your last visit”.

  • Mind, Food and Therapies

A thought pattern and small steps for your routine; a food guide with Eat and Avoid by food group; and the therapy reports you can add to the session.

  • The Wellness Report PDF

A multi-page PDF built on our servers in English and Kannada, ready to read in the app or save to the phone. A healer can add written suggestions to it.

Share the PDF on WhatsApp or save it to the phone. The app reminds you that anyone you send it to can forward it.

Pulse or tongue?

Two ways to the same wellness report

Both sessions end in the same wellness report with the same tabs and add-ons. The difference is what goes in — and the tongue report shows its tongue reading where the pulse report shows its trace.

Questions

Tongue Wellness FAQs

No. The Tongue Wellness Report needs only an Android phone with the Nadiswara app. You take a tongue photo, answer a few questions about you and get a wellness report without any hardware. The Nadi Pariksha Wellness Report is the one that needs the pulse sensor.
